Why do you need UK Travel Insurance?

Even when you’re staying closer to home, there’s still a risk of unexpected issues, and accidents can still happen. That’s why it’s important to make sure you and your travelling companions are fully covered. Any medical treatment you need in your home country will be covered by the NHS.

However, you’ll still need Travel Insurance in case something is wrong with your accommodation, there are any delays or cancellations, or your need cover for your valuables. For example:

  • When you’re away from home, you’ll likely be snapping some holiday photos or even taking your laptop with you. While away from home, electronics can be at a higher risk of being dropped or stolen. Our Gadget Cover will help you with costs if there are issues with your valuables.
  • Even when travelling domestically, you can still encounter delays or disruptions caused by adverse weather, strikes or mechanical failure. We can provide cover for additional expenses as a result, from accommodation to alternative travel.
  • While Covid-19 is less prevalent than in previous years, it could still impact your holiday.. This could lead you or one of your travelling party to cancel your trip or come home early. We can make sure you’re protected should this happen.

What does AllClear’s UK Travel Insurance cover?

  • What’s covered?

    • Cancellation and curtailment – Cover for your flight and accommodation costs if you unexpectedly have to cancel before you go, or need to return home early following an emergency.
    • Your baggage – Protection against the cost of stolen, damaged or lost luggage and personal possessions. You can also choose to add extra cover for gadgets to your policy.
    • Personal liability – Cover for your legal expenses and any liability due if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property while you’re away.
    • No upper age limit – We think Travel Insurance should be available to as many people as possible, that’s why our UK Travel Insurance policies are available for all ages.
  • What’s not covered?

    • Trips outside the UK – Your UK Travel Insurance won’t cover you if you travel outside of this region, although you can contact us to upgrade your policy at any time.
    • Deciding not to travel – We only offer cancellation cover for approved reasons, such as illness, injury or bereavement. For full details please see your policy documents
    • Claims below the value of excess – the first part of any claim, which won’t be covered.
    • Winter sports for over 65s – While most of our policy options cover all ages, we do not cover anyone over the age of 65 for winter sports like skiing or snowboarding.

Visiting the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man

Reciprocal Healthcare Agreements are in place between the UK and the Channel Islands (except for Guernsey) and the Isle of Man. This means that you’re covered by the local health care system, if you need emergency medical treatment while you’re on holiday in these destinations.

You can submit a claim on your AllClear policy for emergency medical expenses that are not covered under the reciprocal arrangements.

As there is no Reciprocal Healthcare Agreement between the UK and Guernsey, if you’re travelling to Guernsey, we’ll cover your emergency medical expenses up to an unlimited amount.

  • Going on a UK-only cruise? Cruise Travel Insurance is a must-have so that you’re covered if you have a medical emergency on board and need to be evacuated from the ship. This includes medical emergencies resulting from any pre-existing medical conditions you’ve declared.
  • Taking the family away with you? Family Travel Insurance might be what you need. One policy for the whole family means you can be sure everyone is covered, with less hassle and less paperwork.
  • Travelling with a pre-existing condition? That shouldn’t be a barrier to a great holiday. Our Medical Travel Insurance can cover over 1,300 different medical conditions.
  • Doing multiple staycations? Our Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance might be what you need. One policy that lasts all year means less paperwork, and more time enjoying your holiday.

AllClear’s UK Travel Insurance for pre-existing medical conditions

Although any medical costs incurred on a staycation will be covered by the NHS, it’s still important that you declare all pre-existing conditions on your policy. If you don’t disclose any pre-existing medical conditions, this may affect the validity of your policy if you need to claim. You can declare your medical condition through our online medical screening process. This is a simple set of questions for us to understand how your medical conditions affect you.

Frequently Asked Questions on UK Travel Insurance

What does AllClear mean by the UK?

For Travel Insurance, we define the UK as England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

How much does UK Travel Insurance cost?

The cost of any Travel Insurance policy will vary based on various factors, such as where you are visiting and what you plan to do there, as well as your age and any pre-existing medical conditions you might have. Each of these will change the cost of your Travel Insurance policy.

What’s the maximum trip length on a single trip UK Travel Insurance policy?

The maximum duration covered for a single trip taken within the UK is up to 365 days. If you choose an Annual Multi-trip policy, you’ll be covered for an unlimited number of trips of up to 45 days. For longer stays, this can be extended up to 55 days per trip.

Does your GHIC card cover you in the UK?

You do not need a GHIC when travelling within the UK, as it covers only local medical expenses in EU countries. While travelling in the UK you’ll be eligible for NHS treatment for medical emergencies, even if you’re on holiday, so there is no need for the GHIC. Reciprocal Healthcare Agreements are in place between the UK and the Channel Islands (except for Guernsey) and the Isle of Man, so you will be covered there too.

What is the age limit on UK Travel Insurance policies?

We’re pleased to say our AllClear policies have no upper age limit. You’ll only be shown quotes that can cover your age category during your quote.

When does UK Travel Insurance cover begin?

For Single Trip policies, full benefits begin on the travel dates you have selected. However, if you’ve chosen cancellation cover to be included, this cover begins as soon as you buy your policy. For this reason, it’s important to buy your Travel Insurance as early as possible – or as soon as you have your trip booked. If you’ve chosen an Annual Multi-trip policy, cover will begin on the start date you select. If you already have a holiday booked and have chosen to include cancellation cover, it could be worth starting your policy immediately to get the maximum benefit.

Is it best to buy a Single or an Annual Multi-Trip policy?

It depends on how often you intend to travel during the next 12 months. If you’re going on holiday multiple times throughout the year, an Annual Multi-trip policy could work out better value for you. With an Annual Multi-Trip Policy you can travel as many times as you like throughout your insurance cover. There are, however, limits on the number of days you can be away for any one trip.

Does UK Travel Insurance include Covid cover?

Our Superior-rated Covid cover2 is included with all AllClear policies at no extra cost. This includes UK Travel Insurance, as well as Single Trip policies, Annual policies and Group Travel Insurance. Our Covid cover includes:

  • Emergency medical cover: If you contract Coronavirus when you’re away
  • Cancellation cover: Covers you for cancelling your trip due to contracting Coronavirus
  • Curtailment cover: If you have to return home earlier than planned, due to an immediate relative being hospitalised or dying as a result of them having Coronavirus

For more information on specific Covid-related questions, read our Covid FAQs.

What counts as pre-booked accommodation?

Pre-booked accommodation is anywhere that you will be charged a fee to stay overnight, which has been booked before your trip. So not just hotels, this extends to camping or static caravan sites, cottages, houseboats, Airbnbs etc. Accommodation excludes any residential homes belonging to your friends or family.

Do you need Travel Insurance for Jersey from the mainland UK?

The Government of Jersey strongly recommends getting Travel Insurance if you are planning on visiting. They also recommend that if you’re getting Travel Insurance for visiting Jersey, you make sure that your policy covers repatriation and medical transfers for treatment. While travelling in the UK you’ll be eligible for NHS treatment for medical emergencies. Reciprocal Healthcare Agreements are in place between the UK and Jersey. If you need Travel Insurance for Jersey, AllClear UK Travel Insurance covers Jersey as part of its definition (we cover all the Channel Islands.)

Do you need Travel Insurance for the Isle of Man & the Channel Islands from the mainland UK?

The Isle of Man Government, as well as the Governments of the respective Channel Islands, all recommend that you should have Travel Insurance when visiting from the mainland UK. While travelling in the UK you’ll be eligible for NHS treatment for medical emergencies. Reciprocal Healthcare Agreements are in place between the UK and the Channel Islands (except for Guernsey) and the Isle of Man. When buying a Travel Insurance policy for visiting the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, your policy must cover repatriation and medical transfers for treatment, as these are usually extremely costly if you need to be transferred back to the mainland to be treated.
