Cruise Travel Insurance provides essential cover for your cruise. This includes onboard medical emergencies, cruise interruptions and cancellations, cabin confinement and lost luggage.
We can help you find a cruise Travel Insurance policy tailored to your exact needs and preferences, even if you are living with medical conditions. We also have no upper age limits on our cruise policies.
What is Cruise Travel Insurance – and why do you need it?
Cruise Travel Insurance is specially designed to cover all aspects of your cruise, giving you peace of mind and comprehensive protection.
- It’s tailored for cruises: Unlike standard Travel Insurance, Cruise Travel Insurance includes essential cover specific to cruises, including cabin confinement, onboard illnesses, and medical emergencies
- Medical conditions: Cruise Travel Insurance is essential if you’re living with a pre-existing medical condition, as it covers specific cruise-related incidents that aren’t included with standard cover. For example, if you need an emergency air ambulance back to the UK from Spain and don’t have cruise cover, you could face costs of tens of thousands of pounds
- Cover is a requirement for many cruise companies: most cruise operators need you to have a comprehensive Travel Insurance policy in place before you set sail, making this a vital consideration ahead of your cruise
Having the right kind of policy ahead of your trip is a great way to make sure your cruise is smooth sailing.
What does AllClear’s Cruise Insurance cover?
AllClear’s Cruise Insurance covers a wide range of important considerations, from essential medical and repatriation cover to missed departures, cancellations and cabin confinement if you’re ill on board.
We also provide specialist medical cover for over 1,300 different medical conditions, allowing you to cruise with confidence.
What’s covered?
- Medical and repatriation cover – This covers your medical expenses, along with the cost of returning to your home country (repatriation) in case of a medical emergency during your cruise.
- Cruise cancellation or curtailment – Covers you if you have to cancel or cut short your cruise due to unforeseen circumstances.
- Personal baggage – Covers your baggage and its contents if lost, stolen or damaged.
- Missed port departure cover – This covers you if you fail to arrive at your international departure point and miss your cruise. You’ll have financial protection for travel and accommodation expenses to join your cruise at the next scheduled port.
- Itinerary change – You’ll be covered for each port missed due to bad weather or timetable restrictions.
- Cabin confinement – In the event of illness, you may be told to stay in your cabin to prevent the spread of sickness onboard. This cover allows you to claim payment if you’re confined to your cabin by the ship’s medical officer.
- Unused excursions – This provides compensation if you miss an excursion due to an accident, injury, or illness.
- Cover for the cost of a friend or relative – This covers the cost of a friend or relative staying with you while you’re being treated or flying out from home to support you if needed.
What’s not covered?
- Claims below the value of the excess – You’re not covered for claims that fall below the value of the excess stated in your policy
- Trips outside chosen region of cover – Your cover is limited to trips within the designated region of cover chosen at the time of policy purchase
- Known events or circumstances – Claims related to events or circumstances that were known to you at the time of buying the insurance or before booking any individual trip are not covered
- You’ll need to declare all the countries your ship will visit or stop at during your cruise, even if you don’t intend to disembark.
- Standard Travel Insurance, without the cruise upgrade, will not provide any cover for cruises. You’ll also miss out on cover for itinerary changes, missed ports, unused excursions and other areas of cover you’ll need when going on a cruise.

Read more of our customer’s experience:
“This is a return to AllClear after they ‘saved the day’ last year when our original insurance company declined to cover us when we extended our holiday and added a cruise, so there was no going anywhere else and they didn’t disappoint this year.
The advisor was patient, considerate and professional. There were a few health issues to be considered and he explained everything clearly.”

What our Customers Say
Frequently Asked Questions on Cruise Travel Insurance
Do you need special Travel Insurance for a cruise?
Yes, most cruise operators need you to have a comprehensive Travel Insurance policy in place before you set sail. You can add Cruise Cover to our Gold Plus policies or take out Platinum Travel Insurance, which covers cruises as standard.
A standard Travel Insurance policy will not cover cruise-specific risks and incidents, such as cabin confinement, missed port departures, itinerary changes, and onboard illnesses or medical emergencies.
Can you add Cruise Travel Insurance to an existing policy after booking?
For Annual Multi-Trip policies, you can add Cruise Cover to your existing Gold Plus policy after booking your cruise. Cruise cover is already included in platinum policies.
It’s important to ensure your policy covers cruise-specific risks like cabin confinement and missed port departures. So, whether you’re upgrading an existing policy or buying a new one, always check the details to make sure you have comprehensive cover for your cruise.
Do you need Cruise Travel Insurance for a domestic cruise?
Yes, you need Travel Insurance for a domestic cruise, even though you won’t be leaving the country. Many cruise lines now require guests to have valid Travel Insurance to board
While international medical cover may not be necessary, other aspects such as cover for trip interruptions, cancellations, or lost luggage remain essential.
Do you need Cruise Insurance for a river cruise?
Yes, you need Cruise Insurance for a river cruise. You will have no cover on a river cruise if your policy doesn’t include cruise cover.
Does your Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance cover you on a cruise?
If you have a Gold Plus policy, you will need to add Cruise Cover as an optional extra onto your Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance to make sure you’re covered.
If you have a Platinum policy, Cruise Cover is automatically included.
Standard Travel Insurance does not cover cruises, including river cruises. Ensure you have Cruise Cover before departing, as you won’t be covered while on a cruise without this add-on.
Can I add insurance after booking a cruise?
Yes. As long as you have not yet left for your cruise you can buy Cruise Cover after booking your holiday.
Will you be covered if you have a medical emergency on your cruise?
Yes, as long as you’ve declared your pre-existing medical conditions beforehand, and it fits within the terms and conditions of your policy.
What if your port visit gets cancelled due to bad weather?
AllClear Cruise Travel Insurance offers compensation if scheduled port visits are cancelled due to adverse weather or timetable restrictions. Please refer to your specific policy wording for details.
If you have a GHIC, do you still need specialist Cruise Travel Insurance?
Yes, you will still need Cruise Travel Insurance.
The GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) will ensure you are entitled to the same level of treatment as a citizen of that country. However, a GHIC is not a replacement for Cruise Travel Insurance, as it does not cover you for:
- The costs of rescue and repatriation (an air ambulance from Spain back to the UK costs £10,000 or more)
- Lost or stolen property such as passports, baggage or precious items
- Losses from trip cancellation, curtailment and interruption
- Extra travel and accommodation costs due to illness
- Any medical treatment needed outside of the EU
Do Cruise Travel Insurance policies cover land holidays?
Yes, holiday insurance for cruises covers both land and cruising holidays.
If you’re not going on a cruise but are looking for increased cancellation cover, you could choose AllClear Gold Plus or AllClear Platinum, where you can increase cancellation cover up to £25K per person.
Does Cruise Insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?
Yes, Cruise Insurance can cover pre-existing medical conditions, but you need to make sure to disclose them when purchasing the policy to ensure proper cover.
Is it possible to get Cruise Travel Insurance for the rest of my group?
If you’re planning to enjoy a cruise with your loved ones, you can protect everyone under one policy with either a Family Cruise Cover or a Group Travel Insurance.
Do you need to declare all of the places you’ll visit on a cruise?
Yes. Due to the different costs for medical treatment across the world, you need to declare the destinations of your cruise holiday.
Why is Cruise Insurance more expensive?
Medical treatment on a cruise is very expensive compared to most land-based trips. As the cost of potential claims is so high, Cruise Cover can be more expensive than Standard Travel Insurance.
