See the Northern Lights
Many of us have a list of once-in-a-lifetime experiences we’d love to enjoy. A recent survey by Explore Worldwide, an adventure travel company, revealed which sights British over 70s are most eager to see.
From majestic natural displays to awe-inspiring man-made wonders, here are some of the top adventures UK travellers over 70 want to take part in. There’s no time like the present to start planning these trips, no matter your age.
Seeing the Northern lights is top of the list, with almost two-fifths (39%) saying they wanted to see the magnificent Aurora Borealis as it shifts across the sky. Your best chance to see them is in the Nordic countries, such as Iceland or Norway.
To make this an even more unique experience, consider taking a Scandinavian cruise and exploring the fjords and glaciers as the lights dance above you.Visit the Great Pyramids of Giza
A visit to the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt is also a big draw. 19% of travellers wanted to take a trip to see these ancient tombs. There’s much more to see in Egypt, too, so a trip there will keep you busy. Just make sure you bring plenty of protection from the sun and drink lots of water. Consider visiting out of season for more comfortable temperatures and smaller crowds.
Explore Machu Picchu
This magnificent 15th-century Incan citadel is set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru. 19% of the travellers asked would love to explore these ruins someday. While the high hills and steep steps may be off-putting, some companies specialise in planning trips for older travellers. So why not pay a visit to the llamas and enjoy the unrivalled views of the Andes?
Seeing Niagara Falls
Another high on the wishlist is taking a trip to see one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Niagara Falls is a series of waterfalls that flow over the border between the USA and Canada, with 3,160 tons of water flowing every second. Enjoy a boat tour on either side of the border, but bring a good waterproof coat.
Walk along the Great Wall of China
With a total length of over 5,000 miles, the Great Wall of China would take 18 months to walk in its entirety. Luckily, the 17% who said they wanted to stroll along this fantastic feat of engineering only planned to do so for part of the way. Some sections of the Wall are closed to the public, so pick your area carefully.
