What is Over 65s Travel Insurance – and do you need it?
Over 65s Travel Insurance is a specific type of Travel Insurance that caters to the needs of older travellers. This includes specialist cover for pre-existing medical conditions, baggage loss, cancellation and more, providing financial protection if you face any mishaps on your trip.
It’s a fact of getting older that some things, like Travel Insurance, come in handy. This is because there is a higher risk of claims being needed for older travellers. Just some of the reasons Travel Insurance is essential for over 65s include:
-
- One in two people aged over 60 will have a fall at least once a year, according to the NHS. If you have a fall while travelling, our Travel Insurance will cover your costs. With air ambulance prices reaching between £10,000 to upwards of £50,000, Travel Insurance is essential to ensure you won’t face expensive bills.
- Over half (54%) of older people have at least two chronic conditions. We cover over 1,300 different medical conditions. If unexpected issues arise on your trip as a result of these conditions, we’ll make sure you’re protected.
- Emergency assistance for peace of mind: With our 24/7 emergency assistance services, if issues arise, you can rest assured that help and support are just a phone call away.
Unexpected events can disrupt even the most carefully planned trip. Comprehensive over 65s Travel Insurance means you’ll be covered, allowing you to travel with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions on Over 65s Travel Insurance
Is Travel Insurance more expensive when you turn 65?
It’s a fact of getting older that some things, like Travel Insurance, will cost more money. This is because there is a higher risk of claims being needed for older travellers. As such you should expect to pay more for your Travel Insurance once you turn 65.
Which Travel Insurance is recommended for over 65s?
The type of policy you need will depend on your personal needs. If you’re doing one trip this year, Single Trip Travel Insurance will be fine. If you’re doing more than one, why not try Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance? All our policies have no upper age limit and come with Covid cover as standard, for peace of mind.
There are some optional extras that you might want to consider. These include:
- Travelling Companion: Ensure that your travel companion can stay by your side in any eventuality.
- Waiting List: If you’re on a waiting list and have booked your holiday, upgrade to cover against any cancellation or curtailment that may occur as a result.
- Golf cover: Enjoy the same benefits with extra cover for green fees and golf equipment.
- Gadget cover: Protect your most important items for up to up to £3,000.
- Excess waiver: On some of our policies you can choose to waive the excess and pay nothing in the event of a claim.
How often can you travel with over 65's annual Travel Insurance?
How often you can travel will depend on the type of policy you have:
- If you’ve got our Single Trip Insurance, it will cover a one-off trip for up to 365 days.
- With our Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance, the maximum length you can be covered while abroad is 45 days. It will allow you to take any number of trips during the year, within your chosen region of cover. If you need to be covered for longer than 45, you can increase to 50 or 55, depending on your policy type.
What if you buy an over 65's Travel Insurance policy then your medical conditions change?
If your medical conditions change after you have bought a policy with us, please let us know. You can do this online or over the phone by calling our Customer Care Team on 01708 339026. Make sure your policy is up-to-date by letting us know of any changes before you travel.
When should you buy Over 65s Travel Insurance?
You should buy Over 65s Travel Insurance as soon as you have booked your trip. That way, you’re less likely to forget to purchase insurance. You’ll also be protected if any issues arise between booking and travelling. If you’re not in a position to book Travel Insurance right away, make sure you buy at the soonest opportunity so you’re covered for cancellation.
Remember that you need to buy your Travel Insurance before you leave the UK for it to be valid.
Do you need Over 65s Travel Insurance if you have a GHIC card?
You still need Over 65s Travel Insurance, even if you have a GHIC (previously EHIC) card. The GHIC will cover medical expenses in the event of an emergency if you are visiting Europe. However, the GHIC card does not cover any other costs that might be incurred if anything goes awry, such as if your flights are cancelled or you lose your valuables. That’s why having both GHIC and separate Travel Insurance is essential to ensure you’re covered for all eventualities.
Do you need to declare all your medical conditions for Travel Insurance?
You need to declare all your medical conditions before you buy your Travel Insurance policy. If you don’t declare all your conditions and something does happen on your trip, you may find that your policy becomes void and you will be liable for any costs.
What factors will affect the cost of over 65s Travel Insurance?
Your insurance premiums are calculated based on several different factors, including your age and any pre-existing medical conditions you have.
Here are a few other things that contribute to your quote premium.
- Your destination: Some places carry a greater risk of you needing to claim or a more expensive health care system.
- Activities: While we cover some activities as standard, you’ll need to pay an additional premium to take part in others.
- Trip length: The longer you’re away, the greater the odds of a claim, and hence, the impact on the policy premium.
- Additional cover: You may want to include extra cover for a special type of holiday, such as a cruise or golfing holiday.
Does being over 65 affect how long you can travel on the Travel Insurance policy?
No, your age does not affect how long you can travel on our Travel Insurance policies.
The length of stay is only dictated by the policy you’ve chosen:
- Single Trip Travel Insurance covers you for one trip that is up to 365 days long.
- Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance covers you for multiple trips throughout the year, but each trip can last up to 45 days. You can increase it to 50 or 55, depending on your policy type.
Can you get over 65's cover if you're on a waiting list for treatment?
Yes, you can still get Over 65s Travel Insurance if you’re on a waiting list for a treatment. We recommend getting Waiting List Cover as an optional extra when buying your policy, as this will cover you against any cancellation or curtailment that may occur as a result.
Can someone else join your Travel Insurance policy if they're under 65?
Yes, you can add more people to your Travel Insurance policy, no matter their age. As part of our Group Travel Insurance, we can insure between two to ten people on a single policy. There’s no age limit, but we do need to know if anyone in the group has pre-existing medical conditions.
If you’ve already got a policy that you want to add people to, simply chat with us online or call us on 01708 339026.
How often can you travel with Travel Insurance for over 65s?
We believe that your age shouldn’t limit how often you can travel. With our Travel Insurance for over 65s, you’re able to travel as often as you want if you’ve got Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance. This covers you for multiple trips throughout the year, as long as each trip isn’t longer than 31 consecutive days.
