Travelling with thyroid cancer
Thyroid cancer travel tips
Planning your trip
- If you have thyroid cancer or will be travelling with someone who has the condition, consider these thyroid cancer travel tips as you plan for your upcoming holiday.
- Your doctor can help you plan your treatment and medication around your trip to ensure you can fully enjoy it. They may also recommend a more suitable time to go. If you’re on any medication, ask your doctor to provide you with enough medication for the duration of your trip, plus additional in case of unplanned travel delays.
- Drink lots of water, avoid alcohol while onboard your flight and be sure to get up and take a walk around occasionally to maintain proper circulation.
Your right to healthcare in Europe
- The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles travellers to the same level of care a local of the country you’re visiting. It’s free to apply for a card through the NHS, however, do note that the EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance for thyroid cancer. The EHIC would not cover you if you needed to come home in an emergency nor would it cover you for cancellation or baggage.
Travelling after thyroid surgery
- If you recently underwent surgery for your thyroid cancer it’s important to give your body time to recover. Only travel once your doctor or oncologist confirms you’re well enough to. Consider the location and type of trip you’ll want to go on as you will need to keep your neck well supported and out of excessive water. If you plan to spend time at a pool or beach, try relaxing in a lounge chair in the shade with a good book!
Fatigue and travelling
- You may find you get easily fatigued after minimal activity following thyroid cancer treatment. Planning a journey that won’t be too demanding will help to minimise the stress and allow you to fully enjoy your trip. While you might want to travel to exotic countries, starting with something closer to home could be more sensible and a more comfortable option when travelling with thyroid cancer. Planning time to rest can be easy to do in between your exploring, and it will help keep you energised. AllClear values the relaxation a great holiday brings, and with reliable thyroid cancer travel insurance, we hope to help make your travels as enjoyable as possible!
