Liver transplant travel insurance
Liver transplant travel insurance covers you if you are living with a liver transplant and wish to travel with peace of mind. This type of insurance covers you for medical emergencies, even those related to COVID-19, which is vital to prevent unexpected medical bills and give you the support you need if you have any medical problems while you are away.
Ensuring you have comprehensive Travel Insurance for pre existing conditions when going on holiday could be compared to ensuring you bring an umbrella while walking in the countryside. With your umbrella, no matter what the weather’s like you’ll be covered. Likewise, if you have liver transplant travel insurance you can be assured that if anything goes wrong while you’re on holiday, you’ll be covered.
We can offer cover:
- For those who have had a liver transplant
- To people of any age
- To use a 24 hour emergency medical assistance line from abroad if you encounter any medical problems while away
- To claim for any unplanned medical treatment and replacement medication*.
*Providers will vary, so do check the cover limits of the policy you intend to purchase.

Do I need to declare my liver transplant?
No matter how long ago your liver transplant was, you must declare it. The medical screening process will take into account how long ago the surgery was, whether there were any complications, and how much medication you need to take. If you fail to declare a pre-existing medical condition you run the risk of losing your cover.
Single trip or annual multi-trip?
With a single trip policy, you can get cover for a single trip to a single destination. This type of policy will cover you from the start of your policy till the date you return to the UK. An annual multi-trip policy will cover you for multiple trips within a year. These trips will have a maximum duration of between 31 and 45 days depending on your particular policy.

Our medical screening process step by step
Simple steps to get your quote for travel insurance after a liver transplant
As a specialist in medical travel insurance, we offer a simple online medical screening process which takes into account a number of different things, such as your destination, the severity of your current condition and how long you’ll be away for. We believe that medical conditions should not automatically disqualify you from having a fantastic trip and returning back safely.
Ensure you’re fit to travel
It’s always important to ensure you’re fit to travel, especially after a liver transplant! If you’re unsure, see your doctor or oncologist before you book your holiday. They will be able to advise you and confirm whether or not you’re fit to travel. If you travel against the advice of your doctor, this could invalidate your insurance if you needed to make a claim.
Simple 3 step quote process
1. Call us or click a quote button on our site
Once you are ready to start the quote process, the first step is to provide your personal details and information about your holiday plans.2. Complete our simple medical screening process
You then declare the medical conditions for you (and any other travellers) and answer the specifically designed medical questions.3. Get your quotes
You will then get your quotes and can either proceed to buy, or save your quote, at this stage.Declaring your liver transplant
When completing a quote, you’ll be asked questions about your liver transplant. Please declare the condition that resulted in your liver transplant rather than any treatment or surgery you have had or which you’re currently undergoing. You will then be asked relevant questions surrounding doctor and hospital visits and any ongoing treatment.

Travelling after a liver transplant
A new liver can mean a new lease of life and, for many people, going on holiday is a big part fulfilling that new lease of life. But, after a major operation, there are always precautions to take. So to make sure that you can enjoy your holiday to the full, we’ve put together these handy tips on travelling after a liver transplant.
Liver transplant travel tips
Speak to your GP about your travel plans
- If your surgery took place recently, it’s important to inform your doctor about your travel plans as early as possible. Discuss the details about the places you plan to visit and the length of time you will be away. Your GP can advise you on how to use your medication properly.
Take enough medication and some extra
- Take all the prescriptions for your medication and always carry an extra supply. Keep your medication in your hand luggage so there’s no chance of missing a dose due to delay or any loss of luggage. It’s important to stick with the medication recommended by your GP and avoid experimenting with any new herbal or alternative remedies while you are on your trip.
Think about the risk of infection
- Due to the use of immune-suppressant drugs by most liver transplant patients to minimise the risk of organ rejection, extra care needs to be taken when thinking about your destination. Stay away from places with high occurrence of contagious diseases and poor sanitation. You should also check on the health status of the destination you want to visit shortly before departure.
Pay attention to your food and water
- Eating contaminated food and drinks can be a source of infection to the liver and other parts of your digestive system. Ensure you only drink bottled water from a reliable source. If you are not sure about the safety of the tap water, use bottled water to brush your teeth. Also, don’t eat unpeeled fruits, avoid unpasteurised dairy products, and stay away from raw vegetables, meat or fish.
Keep all your tests and medical history together
- It’s a good idea to take details of your medical history – such as allergies, any medication you are taking, etc. – with you, along with your travel insurance documents. You will need details of your insurance provider’s Emergency Assistance Team in case of baggage issues, medical emergencies or other similar circumstances. Check your policy wording for information.
Purchase your travel insurance policy when you book
- Use a comparison website such the one we offer at AllClear, to quickly get quotes from many insurers in one go. You’ll only need to complete the medical screening process once, and you’ll be shown policies from providers who can offer you specialist liver transplant travel insurance. Buy your travel insurance early to protect you from events such as cancellation or pre-trip illness.
Get medical clearance for travelling by air
- You may need to discuss your level of fitness with your airline before you fly. Due to the differing atmosphere in the plane at high altitudes, you may need special attention during the flight. Make proper arrangements for this before you board your plane.
Think about buying annual multi-trip cover for many trips
- If you travel abroad often, you could save a lot of money by opting for annual multi-trip cover instead of single trip cover.
- In fact, if you plan to travel more once twice in a 12 month period, you should consider annual multi-trip cover. It will also save time as medical screening will only need to be completed once. Remember to raise any changes in your health with your insurance provider.
