Q. Why shouldn’t a heart condition stop someone from enjoying travel, and how can they do so safely?

A. “Having a heart condition does not stop anyone from enjoying a holiday. Preparation is key and choosing a destination wisely is important. Ensuring all medical documents, medications and contingency plans are in order is sensible. Preparing for long-haul flights with the right hand luggage requirements, paperwork and assistance would make it stress-free. Make sure you have the right comprehensive insurance in place is essential.”

Dr Preethi Daniel, Deputy Medical Director – London Doctor’s Clinic

How soon after a heart attack can you travel?

How quickly you can travel after a heart attack depends on your recovery, the type of treatment you’ve had, and your doctor’s advice. Many people can fly again within 7–10 days after a mild heart attack, provided there are no complications. If you’ve had surgery, such as a stent or bypass, your recovery time may be longer.

Your doctor may recommend a fit-to-fly certificate before you travel, and some airlines will require it. It’s important to follow medical advice closely, as travelling too soon after a cardiac event can put your health at risk. Always check with your GP or cardiologist before booking a trip, and make sure you have specialist Travel Insurance in place.

Tips for travelling after a heart attack or with heart disease

  • Talk to your doctor (Source: NHS) about your trip and find out if they have any specific advice that you should follow while you’re on holiday. They have the best understanding of your heart condition, and they can let you know of any precautions you should – such as getting up from your seat at least every two hours to improve blood circulation.
  • If you have an implanted cardiac defibrillator (Source: NHS), you should request a hand search at security if possible. There have been no reports of ICD dysfunction caused by metal detectors, but researchers say there could be a theoretical risk.
  • When you are on a special diet for your heart problems at home, try to follow your diet as much as possible on your trip. If you have heart issues, eating too much salt can increase your risk of symptoms – so avoid excessively salty foods while travelling.
  • You will need to arrange medication for the duration of your trip, as well as extra supplies in case you are delayed or your medication is misplaced.
  • If you experience heart symptoms, get emergency medical help right away. You will then need to contact the medical emergency assistance company as detailed in your medical travel insurance policy. You can find the correct telephone number to call for your policy here: Medical Emergency contact numbers.
  • If there are any changes to your health before you travel, including any new medication, please contact our Customer Care Team on 01708 339029 and we’ll be happy to update your cover.

You want to ensure you’re properly covered, does our medical screening process allow you to provide details of your heart disease history?

FAQs

Annual multi-trip or single trip?

An annual multi-trip policy allows you to travel multiple times within a year.

The maximum length of each trip typically ranges from 31 to 45 days, depending on your policy. You may be able to extend this to 55 days per trip with an optional upgrade, unless you’re aged 71 or over and travelling to the USA, Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean, where the maximum stay is 35 days and extensions aren’t available.

If you’re planning a longer holiday or only intend to travel once this year, a Single Trip Travel Insurance policy might be the best choice for you.

Don’t forget: there’s a maximum total of 183 travel days allowed across all trips within a policy year.

What will affect the price of your policy?

We calculate the premiums you’re displayed using multiple factors. These include age, trip duration, destination and pre-existing medical conditions.
