Travel Insurance for asthma gives you peace of mind when travelling, whether your condition is mild or severe. With cover for medical treatment, replacement inhalers, hospital care and cancellations, our policies are designed to protect you against the unexpected. From triggers you may not face at home to lost medication abroad, our specialist asthma cover ensures you can enjoy your holiday with confidence.

Why do you need Travel Insurance for Asthma?

Travelling with asthma brings unique risks that standard policies may not cover. Asthma Travel Insurance ensures you’re protected against:

  • Medical emergencies abroad – cover for hospital treatment if your asthma worsens unexpectedly.
  • Triggers you don’t face at home – such as changes in climate, air quality, or allergens.
  • Lost or stolen inhalers/medication – quick replacements arranged through 24/7 emergency assistance.
  • Severe or mild asthma – policies tailored whether you manage symptoms daily or experience occasional flare-ups.

With specialist cover, you won’t face unexpected bills if you need extra medication, hospital care, or even emergency repatriation during your holiday.

Travel Insurance for mild vs severe asthma

No two people experience asthma in the same way. That’s why it’s important to choose Travel Insurance that recognises whether your asthma is mild or more severe, and provides cover tailored to your needs.

  • Mild asthma – Even if your symptoms are well controlled and you only use an inhaler occasionally, you still need to declare your asthma when buying Travel Insurance. This makes sure you’re protected if an unexpected flare-up happens while abroad, or if your inhaler is lost or stolen.
  • Severe asthma – If you use daily medication, have a history of hospital admissions, or rely on oxygen therapy or nebulisers, specialist cover is essential. Specialist Travel Insurance will give you access to 24/7 emergency medical assistance, hospital treatment if needed, and repatriation back to Ireland or the UK if your condition requires it.

By declaring your asthma accurately during the medical screening process, you’ll receive a policy that reflects your health and travel plans. You’ll have peace of mind so you can enjoy your holiday, whether your asthma is mild or severe.

What does Asthma Travel Insurance cover?

Whether your asthma is mild or severe, you’re still susceptible to an asthma attack. If anything were to trigger an asthma attack whilst on holiday, or if you lost your inhaler or it got stolen, you want to make sure you will have access to a 24-hour emergency medical assistance line from abroad or to claim for any unplanned medical treatment and replacement medication. Providing you have fully declared your asthma, and any other condition you live with, a comprehensive policy should cover you:

  • For mild or severe asthma.
  • To use a 24 hour emergency medical assistance line from abroad if something triggers an asthma attack while on holiday or if you lose your inhaler, or encounter any other medical problems.
  • To claim for any unplanned medical treatment and replacement medication*.

*Providers will vary, so do check the cover limits of the policy you intend to purchase.

  • We understand that the severity of asthma varies – your asthma might be mild, or it might be severe with a history of hospital admissions.
  • That’s why the medical screening questions are designed to get the relevant information needed.
  • This enables us to offer a range of fairly priced quotes for a policy that meets your specific cover needs.

What our Customers Say

How to declare your asthma when buying Travel Insurance

It’s essential to declare your asthma when completing your quote so that you are covered for any asthma related complications you could potentially have while you’re away. As part of our medical screening process, you’ll be asked to provide information about your previous and current state of health. There are a few easy to answer questions about your personal details and then you move onto the pre-existing medical conditions section where you answer questions on recurring illnesses, on-going or lifelong conditions, previous surgeries and any conditions you’re currently suffering living with. This information will then be used to determine your premium (the amount of money you pay for your insurance). Our bespoke system then generates a list of suitable quotes from our providers in price order for your review.

Tips for travelling with asthma

Asthma doesn’t have to stop you from exploring the world. With some extra preparation, you can reduce risks and travel with confidence:

  • Pack extra inhalers and medication – keep spares in your hand luggage as well as your checked bags.
  • Carry a doctor’s note and prescription – this helps if you need replacement medication abroad.
  • Avoid common triggers – be mindful of climate, air quality, or activities that could worsen symptoms.
  • Plan for emergencies – keep your insurer’s 24/7 emergency helpline number saved in your phone and written down.
  • Check airline and airport rules – some carriers require advance notice if you travel with a nebuliser or oxygen.
  • Take out specialist cover – asthma Travel Insurance ensures you’re protected for unexpected treatment, hospital visits, or lost medication.

With the right preparation and specialist insurance in place, you can focus on enjoying your trip while knowing you’re covered if anything unexpected happens, from replacing lost inhalers to receiving emergency medical care abroad. That way, you can travel with peace of mind and concentrate on making memories, not worrying about the “what ifs.

Frequently asked questions

Annual multi-trip or single trip?

An Annual Multi-trip policy allows you to travel multiple times within a year. The maximum duration of each trip varies depending on your policy, but it is typically up to 45 days as standard. You can choose to extend this to 55 days per trip with an optional upgrade, unless you’re aged 71 or over and travelling to the USA, Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean, where the limit is 35 days and extensions are not available.

If you’re planning a longer trip, or only intend to travel once in the year, a Single Trip Travel Insurance policy may be more suitable.

Please also note: there is a total limit of 183 days of travel across all trips in a policy year, regardless of age.

What will affect the price of your policy?

We calculate the premiums you’re displayed using multiple factors. These include age, trip duration, destination and pre-existing medical conditions.

Do you need to declare your asthma, even if it is mild?

It’s essential to declare your asthma when completing your quote; no matter how mild it is. However, we understand that the severity of asthma varies. That’s why, the multiple-choice medical questions allow you to detail how mild or severe your asthma is. We use this information to determine your premium (the amount of money you pay for your insurance) and offer a range of fairly priced quotes for you.

What happens if you need to change something about your asthma after buying your policy?

If your asthma gets worse, you can amend your policy to ensure you are fully covered. Please notify us at the earliest opportunity and in particular before you book or commence your trip.
