What is Long Stay Travel Insurance – and do you need it?
Having the right Travel Insurance is incredibly important, especially if you’re on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday. Long Stay Travel Insurance is designed to protect you on longer trips, whether in one country or travelling around a continent.. The longer you’re travelling, the higher the chance you may face some unexpected issues. From medical expenses to cancellations, you could find yourself facing unforeseen costs and even the risk of your trip being cut short. For example:
- 62% of long-stay travellers in Australia experienced a medical problem, according to a medical research paper.
- Medical repatriation is typically about £300 per mile, meaning it would cost £3.1m to fly the 10,560 miles from Sydney to London.
- Long stay holidaying the USA? One AllClear customer suffered a detached retina in the USA, and faced a total bill of £320,478 for treatment.
You don’t want medical expenses eating into your travelling funds or concerns about them spoiling your trip. If you’re leaving the country for a few months or more, our Long Stay Travel Insurance will help you travel with peace of mind.

Frequently asked questions on Long Stay Travel Insurance
What is the longest you can get Travel Insurance for?
The longest period we can insure you for is 12 months, or 365 days. If you’re planning several trips throughout the year and will be returning home in between them, you’ll need to consider Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance. This policy will cover you for up to an unlimited number of trips for 12 months. However, your policy will limit the number of days you can travel on any one trip to 45 days, or for an additional cost, up to 55 days on AllClear policies.
Can you get Travel Insurance for 4 months?
Yes, this is not a problem. If you’re looking for Travel Insurance for 4 months, for example, select ‘single trip’ quote, and enter the intended departure and return date of your trip. This will make sure you are given options for Long Stay Travel Insurance.
Can you extend Long Stay Travel Insurance?
If you decide you want to travel for longer than your initial trip dates, you can extend your policy before you set off up to a maximum of 365 days. It is vital that you do so before you leave the UK, as we cannot extend a policy once you are abroad.
How much does Long Stay Travel Insurance cost?
The cost of your Long Stay Travel Insurance policy will be calculated on several different factors, including your age and any pre-existing medical conditions you have. Here are a few other things that contribute to your quote premium.
- Your destination: Some places carry a greater risk of you needing to claim or a more expensive health care system.
- Activities: While we cover some activities as standard, you’ll need to pay an additional premium to take part in others.
- Additional cover: You may want to include extra cover for a special type of holiday, such as a cruise or golfing holiday.
Can I add Cruise Cover to my Long Stay Travel Insurance?
Yes, adding Cruise Cover to your Long Stay Travel Insurance policy is simple. When you are entering your information to get a quote from us, just be sure to tick the ‘Cruise Cover’ box and it will be included in your quote. You can learn more about our Cruise Travel insurance here.
