What is Family Travel Insurance – and do you need it?
Family Travel Insurance is a single policy that covers up to two adults and up to eight children. There needs to be at least one named adult on the policy, and all the kids have to be aged under 18. Family Travel Insurance is a good idea if you’re doing a trip abroad with the family, as you only have one policy to take out, one set of documents to refer back to, and one person to call in the event of a holiday mishap. Families with kids under 5 average 1.8 holidays abroad each year, whereas families with kids over 5 average 1.6 holidays abroad a year – according to research from ABTA. That’s a lot of families, enjoying a lot of trips together, and having Family Travel Insurance when travelling is a holiday essential. We know that kids often have slips, trips or falls but this cover is important in case of a more serious injury. After all:
- A BMC Health Services report showed that 56% of all children have attended a hospital appointment in the previous 12 months.
- A single hospital trip can set you back roughly £3,750 in Europe, or over £100,000 in the US.
If you’re heading out with the whole family, costs can quickly stack up. Making sure you’re covered in the event of an emergency is a weight off your mind.

Frequently Asked Questions on Family Travel Insurance
How much does Family Travel Insurance cost?
Family Travel Insurance varies between families. The total cost will depend on several factors, including;
- The number of family members
- Destinations
- Age of travellers
- Medical conditions declared by travellers.
- The type of cover: Annual Multi-trip or Single Trip
Family Travel Insurance can save you time as each family member won’t need to take out an individual policy.
Does Family Travel Insurance cover individuals?
To get a quote as a family, you need up to 2 adults with at least one child (under the age of 18). Adults can travel independently on an Annual Multi-trip policy. Exemptions apply; those under 18 must be travelling with someone over 18 who is insured on the policy.
How many family members will AllClear’s Travel Insurance cover?
Our Family Travel Insurance plans cover up to two adults and up to eight children.
Does Travel Insurance cover adult children?
Our Family Travel Insurance policies only cover two travellers over the age of 18. Any additional adult travellers will need to take out separate policies. If you have adult children (or grandparents who are tagging along) you’ll no doubt want to make sure that they are covered by a Travel Insurance policy. In that case, look into a Group Travel Insurance policy, as these can cover up to 10 adults in a single policy.
Does Travel Insurance cover cancellation due to family illness?
Yes, our Family Travel Insurance plans can cover any costs incurred by cancellation due to family illness – including if any member of the family gets Covid. To make sure you’re covered, make sure you have a policy that includes cancellation cover.
Do you still need Family Travel Insurance if you have a GHIC card?
The UK Government advises that you should always have Travel Insurance with medical cover included no matter what country you visit. The GHIC covers your medical costs whilst in Europe, but it will not cover any other medical-related costs, such as transport to and from the hospital, or repatriation. The GHIC also does not cover other holiday mishaps, such as lost baggage or cancellations.
Should your family get a Single Trip or Annual Multi-trip policy?
It depends on how many times you’re planning to travel abroad this year. If you’re taking multiple trips abroad, Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance is the right policy for your family. However, if you’re expecting to only go abroad once, then consider a Single Trip Travel Insurance policy. Bear in mind that a Family Travel Insurance plan will still cover the named adults even if they’re travelling without the kids – or each other. This means it can still be useful to get an Annual Multi-trip policy for the whole family if you’re travelling multiple times without the kids.
Are there age limits on Family Travel Insurance?
There’s no need to restrict your new holiday memories to the younger members of the family. Travel is for all ages. That’s why there are no age limits on any of our Travel Insurance policies. We’ll cover older adults well into their 80s and beyond.
