Frequently asked questions on Portugal Travel Insurance
Do you need Travel Insurance for Portugal?
Travel Insurance is not legally required for UK citizens visiting Portugal. But, it is highly recommended by both the NHS and the UK Government. While the GHIC will cover some basic medical costs, Travel Insurance will also cover:
- Medical repatriation
- Trip cancellation or interruption
- Lost or stolen luggage
- Adventure sports coverage (if applicable)
Do UK citizens get free healthcare in Portugal?
UK citizens can access healthcare in Portugal on the same basis as Portuguese citizens. How you access healthcare will depend on how long you’re in Portugal.
- UK citizens who are legal residents in Portugal can register for the national health service. They will receive a health number (número de utente de saúde). This is used to access state healthcare services.
- You can also use your GHIC to access necessary healthcare for short-term stays (up to 90 days).
How much does Travel Insurance for Portugal cost?
Several factors determine the cost of a Portugal Travel Insurance policy. This includes your age, medical history, travel destination, and trip duration. We’ll shape your policy to suit your specific needs.
Does the GHIC cover Portugal?
Yes, the GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) covers Portugal for UK travellers. However, there are some things to consider:
- The GHIC entitles you to basic state healthcare in Portugal
- It also covers emergency treatment. This includes treatments for chronic or pre-existing medical conditions. Plus, routine medical or maternity care, and services like oxygen and kidney dialysis.
- However, state healthcare in Portugal is not completely free. You may still have to pay standard user fees called “taxas moderadoras” for certain services. For example:
- €15 for an emergency room visit
- €5 for a GP appointment
It’s always worth having Travel Insurance alongside your GHIC. Remember that the card does not cover all medical costs or services like being flown back to the UK.
