What is Italy Travel Insurance – and why do you need it?
Italy is a top destination for Brits. It offers brilliant sunshine, rich culture, world-famous food and picturesque views. Unfortunately, mishaps can always occur on any trip. Travel Insurance protects against costs from medical emergencies. With AllClear, you’re covered, even if you have a pre-existing medical condition. We’ll also cover you for lost luggage, cancelled holidays2 and if you need to be repatriated back home.
But why is cover for Italy so important?
- Italy is the 3rd most visited holiday destination for Brits. Around 4.9 million Brits headed to Italy in 2023.
- Italy is generally considered a safe country to visit. However GOV.UK warns there are high rates of petty crime such as pickpocketing and bag snatching. If you’re planning to visit, consider appropriate Gadget Cover.
- Heat waves across Italy can make travel difficult and cause health issues. In 2023, parts of the Italian islands of Sardinia and Sicily had highs of around 46C. Heat stroke can land anyone in hospital at that temperature. The right travel insurance can cover the costs, so you’re not stuck with a huge bill.
Getting the right Travel Insurance policy is the key to travelling with peace of mind. At AllClear, we can cover: All medical conditions. All ages. All destinations. 98% of our customers would recommend us to family and friends, so you’re in good hands3.

Frequently Asked Questions on Italy Travel Insurance
Do you need health insurance to travel to Italy?
It is not a requirement for British nationals to have health insurance to travel to Italy. Health insurance is different from Travel Insurance. Travel Insurance is typically used for visitors to a country and doesn’t just cover health. Good Travel Insurance also covers your belongings and travel plans while you’re abroad. For UK residents, health insurance generally refers to insurance that covers private healthcare costs at home.
Do you need Travel Insurance for Italy?
Travel Insurance is not required to enter Italy. However, the UK Government and the NHS recommend that proper Travel Insurance is taken out before leaving the UK. So, while Travel Insurance isn’t mandatory for Italy, it is still important to have. You’ll be protected from unexpected or emergency costs and it could save you a lot in the long run.
How much does travel insurance for Italy cost?
The price of each Travel Insurance policy is based on several different factors. This includes your age, medical history, destination country and area, and the length of your trip. Each of these can vary dramatically depending on the trip and the individual. This means the cost of the Travel Insurance for Italy policy can also vary.
Does the GHIC cover Italy?
The Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) can be used in Italy. It grants access to medically necessary treatment provided by the Italian state healthcare system during your temporary stay. However, the GHIC should not be considered a replacement for Italy Travel Insurance.
Here’s what to keep in mind about GHIC coverage in Italy:
- It might not cover all medical expenses, especially repatriation costs (getting you back to the UK for medical reasons).
- The GHIC is for temporary stays only. If you’re a British resident living in Italy, you’ll need separate health insurance.
- Taking a cruise around the Italian coastline? The GHIC won’t work onboard the ship, nor will it cover any airlift costs back to the mainland if needed.
