What is Ireland Travel Insurance – and why do you need it?

Ireland is a top destination for travellers. It’s renowned for its world-famous hospitality, dramatic scenery and centuries-old castles. However, mishaps can happen on any trip. Travel Insurance protects you from costs arising from medical emergencies. With AllClear, you’re covered, even if you have a pre-existing medical condition. We’ll also cover you for lost luggage, cancelled holidays, and travel delays.

The Emerald Isle has a lot to offer, but it’s important to make sure you’re covered.

  • Ireland is one of the top 10 holiday destinations for Brits. Around 3.4 million Brits visited in 2023.
  • Ireland’s iconic green hillsides and windswept landscapes are thanks to its oceanic climate. This means there’s a high likelihood of plenty of rain and wind during your stay. Meanwhile, extreme temperatures are becoming more common and conditions can be erratic. The right Travel Insurance can cover you if the weather means delays or cancellations of plans.
  • Fáilte Ireland reports that around 28% of overseas tourists engaged in hiking or cross-country walking when visiting. While a fantastic way to explore the country, mixed weather conditions could lead to unexpected injuries.

Travel Insurance can cover the costs of air ambulances or repatriation if needed. Getting the right Travel Insurance policy is the key to travelling with peace of mind. At AllClear, we can cover: All medical conditions. All ages. All destinations. 98% of our customers would recommend us to family and friends, so you’re in good hands1.

Frequently Asked Questions on Ireland Travel Insurance

Do you need Travel Insurance for Ireland?

Travel Insurance is not a legal requirement for entering Ireland. However, while it’s not mandatory, it is highly recommended by the UK Government and the NHS. You can use the GHIC in Ireland to access medically necessary healthcare while abroad. But you should be aware that the GHIC does not cover all medical costs. For example, it does not cover ambulance costs. It also won’t cover the cost of being repatriated back to the UK should you need it.

What is the difference between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in terms of Travel Insurance?

Yes, there is a difference between Travel Insurance for Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland for UK citizens.

Northern Ireland:

  • Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. That means the NHS functions there as it does in England, Scotland, and Wales.
  • While it’s still important to have, Travel Insurance isn’t needed for emergency medical treatments but would still be needed to cover cancellation, luggage, and travel delays etc.

Republic of Ireland:

  • For UK citizens visiting the Republic of Ireland, the situation is different.
  • UK citizens can use their GHIC, which entitles them to the same healthcare as Irish nationals.
  • However, the GHIC does not cover all medical expenses. For instance, it doesn’t cover medical repatriation or emergency medical rescue costs like airlifts.

If you’re visiting the Republic of Ireland, you should take out a Travel Insurance policy. This should have the appropriate level of medical protection.

Do you need health or medical insurance to travel to Ireland?

Health insurance is not required to enter Ireland. However, it is strongly recommended that you have comprehensive Travel Insurance when visiting.

UK citizens can access necessary healthcare in Ireland. This comes under the Common Travel Area arrangement. You can use your GHIC to access healthcare, or you can show other forms of photo ID.

How much does Travel Insurance for Ireland cost?

Several factors determine the cost of a Travel Insurance policy. This includes your age, medical history, travel destination, and trip duration. These elements will differ for each person and trip.

Do UK citizens get free healthcare in Ireland?

UK citizens visiting Ireland can access medically necessary state health services. This is on the same basis as Irish residents. This includes:

  • Free hospital care, including A&E and inpatient treatment
  • Access to GP services (though fees may apply)
  • Access to prescribed medications (though full cost must be paid)

This healthcare access is provided under the Common Travel Area arrangement. This is between the UK and Ireland and wasn’t affected by Brexit. To prove you’re eligible for healthcare, UK visitors must show two forms of ID. One must be a photo ID – like a passport or driving license.
