Russell Wallace

“With good wine, cheese and weather, it’s easy to see why so many Brits love visiting France. From the romance of Paris to the charm of Provence, there’s something for everyone. Although it’s not too far away, it’s important to make sure you’re covered in case of any emergencies. An air ambulance from France can set you back around £10,000 – so having repatriation cover is crucial.”

What our customers say

A pleasurable experience!

“We needed travel insurance for our trip to France in the Spring. My phone call was answered without any delay which is quite unusual these days! It was fairly complicated because of all our medical conditions, but Helen, who dealt with me, was very helpful and clear with all the information. The price of the policy was acceptable to me and all was completed with no fuss.”

Frequently asked Questions on France Travel Insurance

Do you need Travel Insurance for France?

It is not mandatory to have Travel Insurance to enter France. However, the UK Government and the NHS both recommend that you have private Travel Insurance with medical cover if you’re travelling to France, even if you have a GHIC.

How much is Travel Insurance for France?

The cost of any Travel Insurance policy is based on multiple factors, including:

  • Your age
  • Your medical history
  • Your destination – even the particular area of France you’ll visit
  • How long you’re going for

Because each of these can vary so much for each person and trip, there is no standard price for Travel Insurance for France.

Does the GHIC/EHIC card cover France?

The GHIC (previously EHIC) will cover you for any emergency medical treatment while you are in France. However, the UK Government advises that the GHIC is not a replacement for Travel Insurance. You should have both the GHIC and Travel Insurance with medical cover. The GHIC will not protect you against the following:

  • Changes or cancellations of your travel or accommodation bookings.
  • Additional standard costs for treatment.
  • Medical repatriation back to the UK.
  • Treatment that is ruled non-urgent.

Even if you have the GHIC, you will be expected to pay all or some of the costs upfront for treatment and claim reimbursement afterwards. The GHIC is not intended to offer comprehensive cover.

Is healthcare free for tourists in France?

Healthcare is not free for tourists in France. UK Nationals are strongly advised to get the GHIC and private Travel Insurance with medical cover before travelling to France. The GHIC will enable you to receive emergency medical treatment on the same terms as a French national. However, the treatment is not free at the point of sale, and you will be expected to put a down payment on any treatments or surgeries.

Once the treatment has happened, you can claim a refund. Tourists without a GHIC or travel insurance will have to pay the full costs of any medical treatment received in France out-of-pocket.

Do you need additional cover to go skiing in France?

It is recommended that you get Winter Sports cover if you plan to go skiing in France. Winter Sports cover protects you against skiing-related mishaps, such as if you need to be airlifted off the side of the mountain to a hospital. Winter Sports cover also covers you if:

  • Your skiing equipment is damaged, lost or stolen. We’ll cover the cost of repairing or replacing it, up to £500.
  • The pistes are closed. We’ll contribute towards the cost if you have to travel to another resort to ski or cannot ski at all.
  • Your skis don’t arrive with you. If your airline or other carrier delays your skiing equipment for over 12 hours, you’ll get up to £150 for hiring replacement equipment.
  • You’re sick or injured. You’ll be covered for up to £400 of unused parts of a ski trip if you’re too unwell or injured and can’t ski. You’ll need to be medically certified as being unfit for your activity by a doctor at the resort.

Do you need Travel Insurance for a day trip to France?

Heading for a quick city break to Paris? Or jumping on the ferry to Calais? Having Travel Insurance on a day trip to France is not a legal requirement, but it is still advisable. Although you are not going for very long, accidents can occur any time. Without Travel Insurance, you will be liable for the cost if anything happens – like a medical emergency.
