Based on our Summer Survey 2022, more than 1 in 31 (36.4%) of you were interested in taking a cruise. Cruises are often a luxury holiday , and at least 1 in 102 of those we asked plan to spend between £5,000 and £9,999 on their next trip. So you want to make sure you get the most from your trip.
But when is the best time of year to go on a cruise? Like most things, this depends on where you want to go and what you want from your experience. You might want to avoid rough seas or catch a particular event.
Below, we’ve broken down some of the popular cruise destinations and when you might want to enjoy them.
Northern Europe
The most popular cruise destination for UK travellers, according to Statistica, cruises to Northern Europe drew in 275,000 Brits in 2021. With a wealth of history and beautiful landscapes, there are plenty of reasons to join them.
For the best weather, travel in summer, when conditions are nearly perfect on most days. If you want to avoid the crowds but still enjoy decent weather, travel in early May or late August.
If you’re looking to save some pennies, the short season (May-August) means there aren’t many bargains. Try your luck on the first or last cruises of the season.
Mediterranean
Until 2019 the Mediterranean was the most popular destination for British cruise-goers. It is catching back up with Northern Europe, and the Med is still a fantastic destination for a cruise.
If you want great weather for your cruise, the peak season between May and August is your best bet. Just be wary of smaller ships in the Aegean Sea, as the seasonal Meltemi winds can make some uncomfortable waves on smaller vessels.
You may want to consider a trip in early autumn when the weather is still warm, but the kids are back at school, so the crowds are smaller.
Bag a bargain by travelling between October and February, aside from school holidays. Prices are lower, and you can enjoy some winter sun as a bonus.
The Caribbean
With hot weather and more than 700 islands, reefs and cays to explore, it’s easy to see the draw of a Caribbean cruise. Exotic wildlife, friendly locals and excellent local food and culture add to the attraction.
As hurricane season runs between June and November, winter is the best time to head to the azure Caribbean sea. Ships are generally less crowded in addition to the fine weather.
If you’re looking to save money, travel between October and early December, but be aware that the weather won’t be as calm or pleasant in October and November.
Alaska
The USA’s most northern state is popular with cruise lines, drawing over 1.2 million worldwide visitors annually. With breathtaking glaciers and stunning wildlife, there’s plenty to enjoy on an Alaskan cruise.
For the best weather, you may want to travel between late June and mid-July, when the days are longer, and it’s warmer and drier.
For better prices, travelling from mid-May to early June and late August to mid-September can save you some money. However, the weather is cooler and wetter, and there’s less animal activity.
If you want to see as much wildlife as possible, the bears are most active during the salmon run in mid-to-late July. For whale spotting, August is your best chance to catch sight of these marine giants.
No matter which month you decide to set sail, remember the importance of specialist Cruise Travel Insurance.
We hope this has helped you plan your next cruise or even inspired you to try a new destination for your next one: happy sailing and Bon Voyage.
